Mathematics involves the study of topics such as number and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, data analysis and probability, problem solving, reasoning, and more. A fundamental aspect of daily life, mathematics has been in use for thousands of years for such varied activities as calculating the latitude and longitude, developing an understanding of the orbits of the planets, determining the trajectory of rockets returning to Earth, building roads, and assisting chefs to add the correct proportions of ingredients to their recipes.

Where is Mathematics Used?

It has been usual for many years to engage younger students with mathematics lessons that focus on time, calendars, and money—three areas in which many people use math on a daily basis. Counting, adding, and subtracting are three of the most common mathematics skills, but it is becoming more typical to engage students with all aspects of mathematics throughout their schooling. This includes topics that have been reserved for older students in the past, such as data analysis, probability, reasoning, and structuring proofs.
